What is a suspended ceiling?

A suspended ceiling is a secondary ceiling, hung below the main (structural) ceiling. The area above the dropped ceiling is called the plenum space, as it is sometimes used for air conditioning and ventilation air return. The plenum space is also very commonly used to conceal piping, wiring, and /or ductwork.

A typical dropped ceiling consists of a grid-work of metal channels in the shape of an upside-down “T”, suspended on wires from the overhead structure. These channels snap together in a regularly spaced pattern – typically a 600×600 mm grid.

Each cell is filled with lightweight “tiles” or “panels” which simply drop into the grid. Tiles can be selected with a variety of materials, including wood, metal, plastic, or mineral fibres, and can come in almost any colour. Light fixtures, air conditioning and ventilation air grilles, and other fixtures are available which can fit the same space as a tile for easy installation. Most tile material is easily cut to allow fixtures in other shapes, such as incandescent lights, speakers, and fire sprinkler heads.

DGR Building Maintenance have been providing suspended ceiling to a wide range of clients across the North West and throughout the UK since 2010.

Why choose a suspended ceiling?

A suspended ceiling is useful for many reasons, including:

  • Appearance - because of the nature of a suspended ceiling, they can be used to improve the appearance of a property by hiding unsightly pipes and cabling, especially large venting pipes used in air conditioning systems.
  • Sound reduction / absorption - By using dense ceiling tiles coupled with soundproofing material between the gap created by the suspended ceiling the sound can be reduced.
  • Hide uneven ceilings - Especially useful where ceilings have bulkheads and curves, a suspended ceiling can be used to even out and level what may be a very uneven surface.
  • Aids lighting - If you have re-purposed a property, especially an older property that has very high ceilings, a suspended ceiling can help by bring the ceiling level lower to allow with improved lighting, especially in offices and workspaces.

Suspended ceilings are not just a great way of hiding those wires and pipes - they can also breathe a new life into a room, altering it's appearance which can create a level of professionalism in property.

What is a MF ceiling?

A Metal Fabricated Ceiling (also known as a MF ceiling) is a suspended ceiling system suitable for most internal drylining applications. The grid is fully concealed and the ceiling lining is joint-treated or plastered to present a seamless, monolithic appearance.

Often, MF ceilings are used to construct features such as bulkheads, curves and rafts and are high quality plastered finished. This offers a very flexible construction technique for creating features.

What is an acoustic ceiling?

The term ‘good acoustics’ can be applied in a number of different ways, with different meanings. Generally it means a balanced united action between reverberation time, background noise and sound insulation. In a room with good acoustics the required sound is emphasised, while unwanted sounds are eliminated or reduced sufficiently so as not to cause a disturbance.

Acoustic ceilings are often specified by building control and architects in buildings with proposed multiple occupancy, such as flats and apartments.

Additional rubber mountings are required during the construction phase to ensure sound absorption and dissipation.

This along with a special selection of ceiling tiles or sound deadening board ensures acoustic ceilings meet the necessary guidelines as specified for the contract.
